I like the Samsung Pro Endurance SD cards. It loads much faster than the disc drive does. I've been using an SD card for years for my Wii and slightly more recently my Wii U. And at 100+ mb/s you're saturating the Wii U's or the Wii's bus regardless of you using SD or USB. Just don't buy any using QLC which is in fact garbage.
An MLC/SLC SD Card is far more reliable and has more read/write cycles than any HDD.
